George Jarrold was born in Newmarket (Newmarket Q4-1891 3B:530), son of Samson and Lucy Ann JARROLD (née TINDALL) of St Bernards, Soham.

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Sand Street, Soham with his father Sanson JARROLD [43] retired grocer born Newmarket; his mother Lucy Anne [39] born Huddersfield, Yorkshire; brother Reginald [7] born Newmarket; sisters Ethel Mary [5] born Newmarket and Constance Kate [1] born Soham. Also a cousin Evelyn Kate TINDALL [10] born Newmarket.

He was admitted to Soham Grammar School from private education on 24th April 1901, aged 9 years 5 months. (source:-http://www.sohamgrammar.org.uk/go-to-admission-register.htm)

1911 census...Aged 19, assistant school master, he was at Sand Street with his parents (father now a bookseller and stationer; sisters Ethel Mary, Constance Kate and Edith Lucy [8], born Soham.

His brother Reginald served in the Royal Engineers from 1916 and survived the war.


Enlisted in Norwich.
Dying of his wounds and no Army service record found, there is usually no way of telling when or where he was wounded, but the Chaplain of the hospital ship on which he died, via the newspaper report, has helped in this case.

Local press report:-
Mr.and Mrs.Jarrold, of Soham, have received news of the death of their son, Pte.George Jarrold, of the R.A.M.C.
Pte.Jarrold enlisted in September 1914, in the R.A.M.C., and went out to the Dardanelles in July of the present year. His death will come as a shock to the inhabitants of Soham, as he had been a student at the Grammar School, and his kindly disposition had endeared him to everyone. He was only 24 years of age. He was wounded in the thigh on October 15th in the Dardanelles.
Mr.Jarrold received the following communication from the Chaplain of the hospital ship on which Pte.Jarrold died:-"Dear Sir, No doubt by now you have heard of your son's death on the hospital ship Aquitania. As Chaplain of that ship it was my sad duty to bury him on October,26th at 11.30 a.m., in the Bay of Biscay. The cause of death was a wound in the thigh and dysentery. Please accept my deep sympathy in your great sorrow -Yours Sincerely, P.D.Ellis, Chaplain H.M.H.S. Aquitania."
